The Eye’s cartoonist Vaughan showed Santa’s arrest by ICE agents (p31, Eye 1664) but here in the USA Santa is now not just an undocumented immigrant but a threat to Democracy itself. Over Christmas, Republican state senator Chris Garten posted images of him kicking and punching Santa on the steps of the Indiana state capitol. Garten seems to believe that Santa is part of the federal government, represents “bureaucratic overreach” and needs taking out. Such is life in Trump’s America today.
