Phone hacking, Issue 1371

Andy Coulson is still banged up in Belmarsh
When Andy Coulson was incarcerated in Belmarsh prison, home to terrorists and high-risk prisoners, newspapers wrote that he would quickly be transferred to an open prison. But Coulson is still banged up in the frightening environs of the category A prison and hoping for news of a move. Reports from inside say he has already been attacked by a criminal once featured on the pages of his former paper, the News of the World.

Now the Eye learns that the ex-editor is being forced to share his prison cell with a particularly terrifying inmate – one Neville Thurlbeck, his chief reporter at the Screws! While the prison authorities might have seen this as an ideal pairing, keeping the pair safe from the heavier inmates, tabloid insiders say they are not happy bedfellows.

Did nothing to stop it
Thurlbeck hacked David Blunkett’s phone in 2004, and during his trial Coulson stated that this was the only incident of hacking that he knew of and had ordered it to stop immediately. But Thurlbeck later gave evidence via his lawyer at his mitigation hearing that Coulson had known about phone-hacking and did nothing to stop it happening during his time at the Screws. He rejected outright Coulson’s version of events. His lawyer told the court: "That is simply not accurate. No such disapproval of the practice was given by Mr Coulson. There was no direction to stop.”

Now that he is playing Godber to Coulson’s Fetcher, they will have plenty of time, roughly 22 hours a day, to work out their differences.
